Camping and Horse Trails in Colorado

The beauty of Colorado is quite inviting to nature lovers everywhere and the miles and miles of scenic trails winding through the state make Colorado even more appealing.  There are thousands of miles of trails in Colorado, ranging from easy to quite challenging and strenuous.  Some trails are designated for hiking and bicycling, while some are used for all terrain vehicles and off-roading.  There are also hundreds of miles of bridle trails winding through the gorgeous landscapes of Colorado.

There are 54 national recreation areas in Colorado that offer several miles of trails for horseback riding, including 6 national parks, as well as 20 Colorado state parks with Equestrian trails.  Three US Forest Service campgrounds provide horse camping sites and 2 of Colorado’s state parks offer campgrounds with nearby horse corrals.  There are also Horses for rent at several of the recreation areas and state parks.

San Isabel National Forest in central Colorado has four designated trails for horseback riding and 2 campgrounds that offer horse sites.  Alvarado Reservation Campground has 3 horse camping sites that allow 8 people each.  Toilets and drinking water from a hand pump are provided and the campground is near the breathtaking and challenging Sangre de Cristo wilderness trails.  Don’t forget to carry a Coleman emergency poncho in case you’re caught in one of the common afternoon thunderstorms.

The Purgatoire Reservation Campground also accommodates 8 campers with horses and provides a selection of 8 horse camping sites.  Jacks Gulch campground in northern Colorado just west of Fort Collins offers 5 horse camping sites with corrals and several nearby trails for riding.  Visitors to Jacks Gulch can also enjoy bicycling, hiking, fishing, riding ATVs, and observing a variety of wildlife, especially an abundance of birds.

Vega State Park in central Collbran, Colorado has convenient parking for horse trailers with access to hundreds of miles of trails for horseback riding in the Grand Mesa National Forest.  Horse camping is not available in this Colorado state park, but corrals are located next to the rustic cabins and not far from the family campgrounds.  Corrals can be reserved ahead of time.

One of the four developed campgrounds in Colorado State Forest State Park, Brockman Campground, has recently added corral facilities for horse camping.  State Forest State Park offers over 50 miles of trails and roadways that can be used for horseback riding, as well as hiking, bicycling, boating, and fishing opportunities.  This park also has cabin and yurt rentals year round.

If you’re interested in camping and horseback riding in Colorado but don’t own a horse, both Cherry Creek State Park and Chatfield State Park have Stables conveniently located within the facilities that offer guided tours and horse rentals.  Just south of Denver, Cherry Creek State Park is quite popular year round because of its extensive and scenic trails and wide array of amenities, including a marina and a model airplane field.

If you are horse camping in Colorado, it is important to remember that all the Horse Feed used on state or national grounds must be certified as weed free.  This includes hay and pellets.  Check with the campground or park you plan to camp at ahead of time for other regulations regarding your horse.  Some corrals do not have water so it may be necessary to bring buckets or a hose.

How long will pellet horse feed last if i pour corn oil on it?

I am adding corn oil to my horse’s supplements, and as I am still in school, I cannot personally feed my horse twice a day. We pay for someone to give feed to all of our horses. I individually bag his feed for the AM and PM and I was wondering if I could pour the corn oil the day before and let it sit in the bag all night. Will it spoil the feed or not?

Overnight would probably be okay especially as it gets colder, but don’t let it sit for days like that.

Breyer model Horse Toys can do something that real Horses cannot do, change colors! Not only does your horse get an extreme make-over but you can have a lot of fun in the process. Here are some tips on the materials you will need and how to do it.

1. Paints – Acrylic paints are highly recommended because they are water-based rather than oil-based, so they dry much faster. You can buy tubes of acrylic paint at most art supply stores. In addition to the colors you want for your horse, you will also need to get black and white, which is used for highlights and smaller accents.

2. Brushes – You will need a lot of brushes in different sizes for painting different areas. To get started, get as many as you can afford to get in the 0-5 range of Sable Brushes. You will need some that can be dedicated to certain colors while others can be used for blending colors.

3. Foam Rubber – You will need foam rubber or something like it for blending colors. Some people use cosmetic sponges while others make due with just using their fingertips.

4. Gesso or Auto Primer – Gesso or auto primer is needed to spray on or rub on prior to

painting. This chalky substance helps the paint to adhere to the horse better. Gesso is necessary if you are painting an unpainted model made of resin. Other types of models can get by without this step. You can find it in your hobby supply store in black, white and grey colors.

5. Matte Sealer – Just like ordering your pictures from a developer you have to choose whether you want a matte finish or a gloss finish. After you have painted your horse and allowed the paint to dry, you will need to spray it with matte sealer. If you prefer a glossy look, you can choose gloss sealer but most people prefer the matte finish.

6. Photo – It helps a lot to have a photo of the horse you want your Breyer horse toys to look like. If you can get photos from different angles it will really help with shading and highlighting.

7. Clear Nail Polish – This helps add a finishing touch to make the model horses eyes shine.

Now that you have gathered all the materials needed, you can begin the actual process. Before you can start painting, some model horse toys need some preparation. Plastic horses are fine the way they are so no pre-treating is required. However, if your horse is made of resin, china or ceramic, you will need to pre-treat it by spraying it with matte finish. This is necessary to get the paint to adhere to the slick surface.

The next step is to start painting. You will need to experiment with mixing colors to achieve the desired color. Start with light colors then add dark colors, then back to light colors for finishing highlights on the muscles. Paint the underside of the horse first, including the inside of the legs. Allow the paint to dry there before proceeding. Adjust the color for the top side of the horse and paint there. Again start with lighter colors before proceeding to darker colors. Allow the paint to dry before applying the next darker color. Use a piece of foam or sponge to blend and feather the color on top into the color on the underside. Finish up with lighter colors for the highlights and the horse’s unique markings. For the eyeballs and nostrils, it is easiest and also realistic to paint them black. After the paint has dried, applying clear nail polish will help make them shine. After all the paint and nail polish is dried, spray with matte finish to protect the paint. That is all there is to giving Breyer horse toys an extreme make-over!

Famous Vans in TV History

Those of us of a certain age have certain vans imprinted on our unconscious, thanks to the medium of television; think of the Mystery Machine, driven by Fred and The Scooby Doo Gang or the distinctive black van used by Hannibal Smith’s A-Team. Younger viewers are being introduced to the less dynamic, but equally lovable van driven by Postman Pat. And possibly the least stylish hybrid van that we all remember has to be the ‘Trotters Independent Trading Co’ van driven by Del Boy from ‘Only Fools and Horses‘. In fact, this last van is so popular and so instantly recognisable that one of the three-wheelers actually used in the show has recently sold for £44,227.50. Let’s hope the new owner has got cheap van insurance!

A recent poll by Toys R Us found that the Mystery Machine was the most popular fictional vehicle of all time. Although it has no official model or make, it is generally assumed to be a ‘groovy’ camper-van. The ‘flower-power’ designs and the Machine’s slightly psychedelic paint-scheme help to capture an age of television that was seemingly innocent, yet hinted at ‘extra-curricular’ activities; just why was Shaggy so spaced out and hungry all the time and what was in those Scooby Snacks? Such is the Mystery Machine’s popularity that a large number of camper vans, Chevy’s, GMs, Fords and Dodges have been converted in tribute to the Scooby Doo Gang’s wheels.

The A-Team’s ride, by comparison, was less quirky and certainly had the edge on machismo. Their sleek, black van was as much a part of the team as BA Baracus, providing them with a home on the road and a seemingly endless supply of tools with which to convert old combine harvesters into flame-throwing tanks. With its instantly recognisable red stripe, this GMC van was more than just a getaway car; it became an icon of automotive popular culture that simply oozed class.

The Ecto-Mobile, used by the Ghostbusters in the films of the same name, may not have had the class of the A-Team van, but it promoted the idea of the heroes who were fighting odds that were stacked a mile high against them. A converted hearse, it obviously tapped into an alternative power source, enabling Dan Ackroyd and his gang to bust ghosts right, left and centre. Although used for less other-worldly purposes, Postman Pat’s van is equally recognisable, having taken children’s drawings as its inspiration. Originally, the bright red van used a generic crown symbol to represent the Royal Mail but, when the Royal Mail gave their consent for the logo to be used it was changed accordingly.

The celebrity van of the future, is likely to be somewhat different to these icons of the past – however, you may not notice from the outside. Conventional vans run from fossil fuels, such as diesel, whereas hybrid vans work from a combination of fuel and electrical technology. As well as all the benefits that are offered to the driver and his passengers, this also has a positive effect on the environment. Because they can run on a minimal amount of fossil fuel, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a hybrid van is much less than that of a standard vehicle. There is also less potential to run out of fuel at an inconvenient moment; because the hybrid van can charge its batteries as it runs, there should always be a reserve source to draw on when fuel gets low.

While celebrity vans from our past have been indelibly printed in our memories, it is hybrid vans that are likely to grace our screens in the future.

buying an ex racehorse?

i am doing a speech on the dangers of buying ex racers for family riding without knowing the consequences. ive seen two serious accidents due to ignorance on the mentality of the horse. my friend has one for sale that many wanted to buy for children or teens. she wont sell to inexperienced riders. they want the horse without even knowing the history. They can be great horses, but there are major facts to know, like another horse running past. Now it thinks its racing. I need a website that explains the dangers of buying without knowlege.

Yes think I’ve seen something about racehorse rehab and screening owners that Clovit mention, obviously horse dealers are not going to say much, neither is someone who wants to get rid of a problem horse!

Check with the ILPH, international league of protection of horses, havea feeling that the racehorse rehab might be something to do with them, have not had their magazine for sometime.

Listening Post, the intelligent Horsemanship magazine has article on racehorses, and Kelly Marks was persueded by Monty Roberts to buy a race horse at Ascot sales and it will be following her progress to re-habilitate this horse.
